Rey Mysterio Jr.Rey Mysterio, Jr., real name Oscar Gonzalez, was born in 1974 in San Diego, right on the border of Tijuana, Mexico. It was in Tijuana where his uncle, the legendary Rey Mysterio Sr., made a name for himself as one of the top stars and promoters in Mexico in the 70s and 80s.

Rey Mysterio, Sr. helped train the younger Rey for his career in the ring, beginning at the age of 14 in a training camp that also produced Konnan and Psicosis. On April 30, 1989, he made his debut under the name of Colibri, facing Shamu in California. Over the next three years, he would wrestle on his uncle's shows as well as for other Southern California indies. After also wrestling as Super Nino, Mysterio had to earn his uncle's permission to wrestle as Rey Mysterio, Jr. (King of Mystery).

He dropped out of high school at the age of 17 to focus on his wrestling school. His first championship came on October 28, 1992, when Mysterio Jr. captured the Comision de Box y Lucha Libre Mexico D.F. National Welterweight title from Fantasma de la Quebrada.

In 1992, Rey Mysterio, Jr. headed south to Mexico to compete in the Asistencia Asesoria y Administracion (AAA) organization, taking on Konnan and Psicosis as well as Juventud Guerrera while winning both the AAA Welterweight and Light Heavyweight Championships. He would also win the WWA versions of those titles, and teamed with Rey Mysterio, Sr. for the WWA Tag Team Championships, defeating the Villanos IV and V.

With his daredevil style and suicidal moves, Rey was being compared to legendary Japanese wrestler Tiger Mask, and frequently toured with the Japanese War promotion.

In the fall of 1995, Rey Mysterio, Jr. was contacted by Paul Heyman and headed north to Philadelphia to compete in ECW, mostly facing an old foe, Psicosis. Mysterio, Jr. would defeat Psicosis in a "Mexican Death" match at November to Remember '95.

A year later, Konnan would alert World Championship Wrestling to the abilities of his friend, Rey Mysterio, Jr. and Mysterio, Jr. would debut in WCW against then-Cruiserweight Champion Dean Malenko at the 1996 Great American Bash. In July 1996, Mysterio, Jr. would again defeat Psicosis, this time to earn a title shot against Malenko on Nitro, in a match that would begin Mysterio, Jr.'s first reign as WCW Cruiserweight Champion. A few weeks later, Mysterio, Jr. would defeat Juventud Guerrera to unify the WCW Cruiserweight title with the WWA Welterweight Championship.

Four months later, Rey Mysterio, Jr. would finally drop the WCW Cruiserweight title back to Dean Malenko and then begin losing matches to Prince Iaukea as the Prince defended the WCW Television Championship. As 1998 began, after another (brief) reign as Cruiserweight Champion, Mysterio, Jr. took some time off due to a knee injury.

Rey Mysterio Jr. returned at 1998's Bash at the Beach to face the man he lost the belt to, Chris Jericho and seemed to have defeated him, due to the interference of Dean Malenko, but the match was overturned.

Meanwhile, Rey Mysterio, Jr. found himself a member of Eddie Guerrero's Latino World Order, having lost a match to Guerrero that forced him to join. Ironically, as much as Rey was hesitant to join the LWO, when Ric Flair forced the group to disband in early 1999, Rey continued to sport the LWO colors.

At Superbrawl IX, Konnan and Rey Mysterio, Jr. lost a "hair vs. mask" bout to Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, thanks to the interference of Lex Luger. Mysterio, Jr. would unmask and then take on, and defeat Nash, although Nash would defeat Mysterio, Jr. in a rematch at Uncensored.

Mysterio, Jr. would rebound to defeat Billy Kidman for the Cruiserweight Championship. Rey Mysterio quickly granted Kidman a rematch but before the bout could take place, Kidman and Mysterio would team up and, on Nitro, defeat Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko to win the WCW Tag Team Championship.

After losing the tag titles to Raven and Perry Saturn, Mysterio began teaming with Konnan, eventually forming the No Limit Soldiers, feuding with the West Texas Rednecks, led by Curt Hennig, who believed that "Rap Is Crap". With the end of the fued, Mysterio and Konnan continued teaming, and formed "The Filthy Animals" with Eddie Guerrero and Billy Kidman.

In August 1999, Rey Mysterio dropped the Cruiserweight title in a bit of a shocker to Lenny Lane and shortly thereafter, the Filthy Animals had a short heel turn. Konnan and Rey defeated Harlem Heat for the WCW Tag Team Championship but Mysterio, Jr. was injured during the match, causing the title to be vacated.

It wouldn't be until April, 2000, when Rey Mysterio would come back full time to WCW, and when he did, he rejoined the Filthy Animals and the New Blood, headed by Vince Russo and Eric Bischoff. Joined by Disco Inferno and Juventud Guerrera (but minus Billy Kidman), the Animals feuded with Misfits In Action.

Juventud and Rey Mysterio, Jr. would defeat the Great Muta and Vampiro in August 2000 and would not lose the belts in the ring. Instead, they would be forced to forfeit the titles when Disco Inferno put the belts up as part of his own match (which he lost) against Ernest "the Cat" Miller.

During the last months of WCW, Rey Mysterio, Jr. and the rest of the Filthy Animals would battle the Natural Born Thrillers, Boogie Knights (the team of Disco Inferno and Alex Wright) and Kronik, the Harris Brothers and Team Canada. Rey Mysterio, Jr. would come up empty in his pursuit of Chavo Guerrero, Jr and the Cruiserweight Championship while he and Kidman would make it to the finals of the WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship tournament, losing to Kid Romeo and Elix Skipper. However, on the last night in WCW's history, Kidman and Mysterio defeated Romeo and Skipper to win the belts.

While many of his fellow WCW superstars became members of the WWE roster, Rey Mysterio's debut would not come until July 25th, 2002, defeating Chavo Guerrero, Jr. on Smackdown. And while Mysterio, Jr. wowed WWE crowds, he lost his initial pay-per-view bout, against Kurt Angle at SummerSlam.

After some more matches against Angle, Mysterio, Jr. teamed with Edge and made it all the way to the finals of the tournament to crown new Smackdown Tag Team Champions. Who was waiting for him in the finals? Kurt Angle, who had teamed with Chris Benoit to earn their own slot in the finals. Angle and Benoit won the bout and the titles, but a victory of Eddie and Chavo Guerrero Jr. made Edge and Mysterio, Jr. the top contenders to the tag titles. In November, Edge and Rey Mysterio, Jr. got their rematch and won the Tag Team Championships.

That reign would end in defeat at the hands of Los Guerreros in a triple threat match at the 2002 Survivor Series (Benoit/Angle was the other team) but by December, Rey had bigger problems. He was injured at the hands of Albert and was out of action until January, when he would team with Brock Lesnar to defeat Albert and the Big Show on Smackdown.

After defeating Jamie Noble and Tajiri in a Triple Threat match, Mysterio became the number one contender to the WWE Cruiserweight title, facing Matt Hardy at Wrestlemania XIX. Thanks to interference from Shannon Moore and some cheating tactics, Hardy retained the championship.

While teaming with Tajiri against A-Train and the Big Show, Mysterio raised the ire of the Big Show, leading to a bout against the two at Bashlash 2003. Show gained the victory and even injured Mysterio after slamming the cruiserweight (who was strapped to a stretcher) against a corner post. Mysterio returned to help Brock Lesnar during the Big Show/Lesnar stretcher match at Judgment Day.

Rey Mysterio returned to his quest for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship, having to go through Shannon Moore and Crash Holly and overcome a groin injury to get his shot at Matt Hardy's title. Mysterio took advantage of a title shot on a June Smackdown, defeating Hardy and becoming Cruiserweight Champion.

With Rey Mysterio defending the Cruiserweight Championship, he began teaming with Billy Kidman in an unsuccessful attempt to win Smackdown's Tag Team Championship, but the belts, held by the World's Greatest Tag Team eluded them. Meanwhile, after getting a face full of green mist, Mysterio began feuding with Tajiri, which led to Tajiri's winning the Cruiserweight title in September, 2003. The loss would not end things between Tajiri and Mysterio, who also had to contend with Akio and Sakata. Finally, in January 2004, Mysterio regain the championship.

Although Rey Mysterio would retain against Jamie Noble at the Royal Rumble, he would not be so lucky against Chavo Guerrero, Jr., dropping the title at No Way Out. Although it seemed as if Rey had gained a championship match for Wrestlemania XX, Paul Heyman decided that there would be a Cruiserweight Open for the Championship, during which Chavo, Jr. retained.

Mysterio then began to team with Rob Van Dam against the Dudley Boyz and that changed little in June, when Rey regained the Cruiserweight title from Chavo Guerrero, Jr. Mysterio would still be facing a Dudley Boy but it was Spike Dudley who would unseat Rey as Cruiserweight Champion on July 15th.

Although Mysterio would switch gears from the Cruiserweight Championship as his goal to the U.S. title (resulting in a defeat at the hands of Carlito Cool in October), he would also continue to team with Rob Van Dam to face Rene Dupre and Kenzo Suzuki and finally, on December 9th, the team won the WWE Tag Team titles on Smackdown. Just over a month later, on January 13th, with Van Dam going down to injury, they dropped the belts to the Basham Brothers.

A month later at No Way Out, Rey and Eddie Guerrero would defeat the Bashams to win the Tag Team Championship. However, things began to deteriorate between Eddie and Rey, thanks to some miscommunication and a few mind games from Chavo Guerrero, Jr. Eddie and Rey would remain tag champs, but would face off against each other at Wrestlemania XXI with Rey coming out victorious.

However, within a month, the team of Guerrero and Mysterio, their relationship strained by several miscues during the WWE's Championship Series, would lose the belts to the debuting team of Johnny Nitro and Joey Mercury. A week later during a rematch in England, Eddie would walk out on Mysterio, leaving him to fall prey to MNM.

Rey would continue to battle Eddie, including a victory over his former tag partner at Judgment Day. Eddie, upset at his inability to beat Rey, would make the feud personal by involving Rey's son, Dominic, and a family "secret".

The two former friends would clash at the Great American Bash in a bout where, if Rey lost, Eddie vowed to tell the world, and especially Dominic, about the secret. Fortunately for him, Rey came out with a victory, leaving the world wondering, however, what the next chapter in this feud might contain.
